Whether you love it or hate it, nothing can knock Durian off the crowning title of the King of Fruits. While others might find it repulsive because of the pungent smell, durian lovers like me would agree that this thorny fruit is a real treat to have because of how insanely addictive it is.

Packed to the brim with freshly sourced durians, resident durian expert Jonathan Ng will pick out the best flavours to suit your taste buds and personal preference.
Carrying a wide selection of different grades, you’ll find that everything from the premium Mao Shan Wang to the luxurious Wang Zhong Wang and even the Super Black Gold is ripe for the picking and ready to be indulged in.
Starting off with the light-tasting D101 ($14/kg), it happened to be comparatively bigger than the others. Tinted with a deep yellow hue, this one boasted a soft and creamy flesh that was easy to extract from the husk.
Upon consumption, a bittersweet aftertaste lingered in our mouths, making this the perfect pick for those who aren’t particularly fond of those durians that are on the sweeter end of the spectrum. The smell wasn’t too intense either so this is definitely a good pick for you if you prefer something milder.
Next, we had the D17 ($18/ kg) that was easily identifiable from its pale yellow and almost whitish skin. This had a similar bittersweet taste as the previous selection but leaned more towards the sweeter side. The flesh also seemed to be softer and pulled away from the seed easily.
Following that, we took it up a notch by moving to the durians with a heavier flavour profile. And what better way to begin than with Singapore’s favourite durian, the Mao Shan Wang ($27/kg).
With both a strong smell and taste, this variety is known for having an intense flavour but that’s to be expected from a premium grade. The absolute creaminess of the flesh comes close to having a buttery consistency and that is probably why this is the nation’s best-loved.
Saving the best for last, we had the Wang Zhong Wang ($32/kg). Dubbed the king of kings, this is a grade up from the Mao Shan Wang and is hands down the most intense yet.
The creamy custard-like texture of the durian also makes it one of the softest out there. That said, the beauty of this is really in the flesh that boasts a sweet taste followed by a hint of bitterness that will leave you wanting more.
